AI search visibility is the share of questions your buyers ask — of ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews — where your brand appears in the answer. It is the AI-era equivalent of your share of search, and unlike classic rankings, almost nobody is measuring it yet. That makes it the cheapest competitive edge in marketing right now.
The audit method is simple enough to run manually. Build a query set of twenty to fifty real buyer questions in your category — 'best agency for a booking site', 'alternative to X', 'who does Y in Z'. Run each through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. For every answer, log three things: is your brand mentioned, is it cited as a source, and who appears instead of you. That last column is the gold: it is your competitor's citation moat, itemized.
What the numbers mean: mention rate (how often you appear at all), citation rate (how often a source link points to you), and competitor share (how the answers carve up your category). A typical business discovering this for the first time finds a mention rate near zero and two or three competitors quietly owning the answers. The gap analysis converts directly into a to-do list: which queries to attack, which directories to join, which content to write.
The common failure modes are predictable. Sites that block AI crawlers in robots.txt are invisible by choice. JavaScript-only content cannot be extracted. Inconsistent entity data — different names, offerings, or facts across your site and profiles — teaches models to distrust the entity. And thin, unstructured pages give a model nothing to quote even when it arrives. An audit surfaces which of these is capping you.
Tracking over time is what turns a snapshot into a strategy. Run the same query set monthly, log the movement, and double down on what moved the needle — the discipline is identical to rank tracking in classic SEO, just aimed at answers instead of positions. Businesses that instrument this now will watch their share of AI voice climb while competitors do not even know the metric exists.
We run these audits with a repeatable methodology — query set design, multi-engine runs, gap analysis, and monthly tracking. It is the first deliverable of our GEO & AEO service, and the output is a prioritized plan, not a slide deck.
