GEO in marketing stands for Generative Engine Optimization: the set of practices that make generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot — cite, mention, and recommend your brand when users ask questions in your category. It is the discipline that replaces classic keyword ranking with citation earning.
Why it matters is a volume story. A growing share of product research and vendor selection now happens inside AI answers. When someone asks 'which agency should build my booking platform', there is no results page to rank on — there is one synthesized answer with a handful of sources. Being absent from that answer is the new invisible. And because these systems quote and reinforce the entities they already cite, early presence compounds while latecomers pay more for less.
What actually moves the needle in GEO? First, machine-legible content: clear claims, direct answers, structured data, and question-shaped headings that an LLM can extract confidently. Second, entity consistency: your name, offering, and facts identical across your site, profiles, and the directories AI systems use for grounding. Third, presence in citable sources: reviews, comparisons, listicles, and original data — the material models retrieve when composing an answer. Fourth, technical openness: allowing AI crawlers, publishing an llms.txt file, and keeping your content fetchable without JavaScript gymnastics.
What to ignore: keyword-stuffing prompts, 'AI detection' tricks, and anyone promising guaranteed ChatGPT rankings. No one can guarantee a citation because the systems re-synthesize answers per query. What you can do — and measure — is raise the probability through the fundamentals above, and track your share of AI voice with repeatable query sets.
A concrete starting playbook fits in one afternoon: pick the twenty buyer questions your prospects actually ask, run them through ChatGPT and Perplexity, and log who gets cited. That gap analysis — which answers mention competitors but not you — is your GEO to-do list. Then fix the extraction basics on your site, claim or correct your entity data everywhere it appears, and get listed in the two or three directories your category actually has.
GEO is not a replacement for SEO — Google remains the largest single source of intent. It is the second channel, growing fast, with early-mover economics. The brands that treat it that way — classic SEO plus deliberate AI visibility — are the ones showing up in the answers.
We run GEO programs end-to-end, audit to citations. See the full methodology on our GEO & AEO service page.
